Game Review Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force
Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force or FFF ADF for short is a remake from Fairy Fencer F but with tons of extra content. FFF was released on PS3 and PC while FFF ADF was released on PS4 and PC. FFF ADF is like the complete edition of FFF. A lot of unanswered questions from FFF got answered in FFF ADF.
The story revolves around Fang, a lazy bump that got a magical sword by accident because he wanted to get free food. The story escalated into an adventure where Fang and his team, Tiara, Harley, Galdo, Ethel, Pippin and Sherman explore the world to find Furies, swords with magical power in them to unseal the Goddess and seal the Vile God for good.
Yes, that is the gist of FFF. Now what about FFF ADF? FFF ADF gives us more choices. The FFF story is called Goddess Route, but there are 2 more story that you can play, the Vile God Route and False Goddess Route. Each route has its own requirement. The requirement is based on the number of seal you pull from the Goddess or the Vile God. Pulling less than 7 furies from Vile God will make you go to Goddess Route, pulling 7-15 furies will make you go to Vile God Route and pulling 16+ furies will make you go to False Goddess Route. I won’t tell the stories for Vile God and False Goddess Route because that is for you to find out.
If you have played Hyperdimension Neptunia, then you will be familiar with the battle system. The battle system is turn based with 3 people in a team for FFF and 6 people in a team for FFF ADF. Sounds like you got it easy, right? Well, just so you know, sub-event BOSSes are very though in FFF ADF. Back to battle. When it is your character’s turn, you are free to walk everywhere within your character’s range. Attacks also have their own range and if the enemy is out of range you can’t attack it. There are skills and items, just like your typical JRPG games. The “Ultimate Skill” in this game is called Fairize. Fairize increase your character’s attack and defense. However, you can’t exploit this feature. To Fairize, you need to fill the bar above your character’s picture and you can only Fairize when the bar reach a certain point. Receiving damage while in Fairize will reduce the bar. Having the bar too low will also lower your attack and defense.
Each character has “Unique Skill”. These skills are based on their characters. For example, Fang has “Serious Face”. This skill increase Fang’s attack and defense but every attack cost SP and every skill cost 1.5x more SP. Fang has “Serious Face” because he usually aloof and rarely take things seriously. That’s why when he is serious, he consumes more SP. Tiara has “Barrier”, a skill where she and only she got protected by a barrier. However, while the barrier is active she can’t use skills, items, or attack. Tiara has “Barrier” because she is selfish and only protect herself. Other character has their own special skill that will be explained in game.
To develop your characters, other than leveling up, after battle you will get WP, Weapon Point. These WP can be used to increase you ATK, DEF, Range, Fairize power multiplier, Combo Count, Skills, Weapon skills and Abilities. Generally, your weapon has 3 types, Heavy attack, Launch attack, and Chase attack. You can arrange you combo for example : Normal Attack, Launch Attack, Chase Attack, Heavy Attack, and so on.
To fill your time, the game gives you sub-quests. These quests are ranked from E to S. To do certain ranked quest, you need to have that certain Quest Rank. For example, at first you are at E rank. After doing a lot of quest, you can upgrade to C rank by doing a certain quest, and so on. Some of these quests are crucial to the story and to get complete collection of furies, so watch out for those quests.
Talking about furies, as said before, you need to unseal the Goddess or the Vile God. To unseal them, first you need to have a fury. The fury will have certain Rank, let us say C rank. Only seals with C rank can be unsealed using this C rank fury. B rank fury cannot be used to unseal C rank fury, and so on. When you unseal a seal, you will have to fight monsters. Make sure you are ready because some of them are quite tough to beat if you haven’t leveled up properly.
The shop system in this game is similar to most game. It also has synthesis. Where you collect objects from dungeons and forge it into another item. Some extra things like Art Book can only be acquired by synthesis. You can also use Synthesis to make fashion items.
I personally grade this game 8 out of 10 because you need to replay the game a lot to have 100% completion. Some of these “collectibles” are quite time consuming. However, the story itself is quite entertaining especially after the release of FFF ADF.
