Game Review: The Lion’s Song

The Lion’s Song is a narrative adventure game which is released in episodes. The game was developed and released by Mi’pu’mi Games. It is set against the backdrop of early 20th century Austria with every episode following a different character, each blessed with an exceptional creative mind. The Lion’s Song is a series of four self-contained point & click stories connected into an overarching narrative, where player choices will affect the way in which the story unfolds. The game pulls players into a story of personal struggle for creativity, human connections and inspiration. There are currently 2 episodes released, the first one is titled “Silence” which was released on July 7th 2016 and the second one is titled “Anthology” which was released on November 21st 2016. The upcoming ones which are going to be released in 2017 are called “Derivation” and “Closure”.

Storyline

The first episode, “Silence” tells the story of Wilma, a talented young musician student. Wilma’s talent was discovered by Arthur Caban, a wealthy university professor, who invited her to Vienna. Arthur is profoundly convinced Wilma is going to play a major part in the future of modern music. Since Wilma is fighting writer’s block trying to finish her career defining composition, Arthur sends her to a solitary alpine cabin to recover her inspiration and muse. Following the second one, “Anthology”, advances into the depths of the human psyche, uncovered by visual artist Franz Markert. Franz is an aspiring painter at the turn of the 20th century, trying to immortalize his name within Vienna’s high society. His unique ability to perceive the flaws, fears and emotions in so-called “layers” allows him to bring them – layer by layer – onto the canvas.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very simple as it is a point and click adventure game. The game also consists of choices in certain dialogues that will affect the game, although only a certain portion of the ending. The players can also interact with people and objects in the game, it sometimes requires you to trigger certain things in order to progress through the game.

Soundtrack & Graphics

The soundtrack is very fitting for the setting that is in Austria. The sound effects also blend well with the game and on certain situations. The art is also very nice even though it is a pixel game. All the different characters are designed perfectly and each completed with their characteristics and roles in the game.
