About Student Design Challenge
CHIuXiD 2017 Student Design Challenge facilitates students (high school, diploma, undergraduate, and graduate program) from various design and technology backgrounds (e.g. HCI, UX, ICT, industrial design, product design, visual design, interaction design) to demonstrate their problem solving and design ability to propose a solution for a socio-cultural issue in Indonesia. This year’s theme for this competition is “Experience Design for All”.
Selected design will be displayed and presented in the CHIuXiD 2017 international conference. You will gain valuable inputs, comments, and suggestions from conference attendees, speakers, academicians, and the panel of international judges.
The design challenge will provide refreshing perspectives on how design teams from different disciplines and different Asia Pacific region approach a common design problem. It will also give you a chance to meet others passionate people working in similar area and provide the participants with an opportunity to network with HCI and design professionals.
- IDR 10 million and IDR 5 million prizes for 1st and 2nd Winners (total amount of IDR 15 million – subject to tax).
- Two rounds: Proposal Submission and Design Challenge. See ACM SIG CHI Extended Abstract for proposal format.
- Certificate of participation for all teams whose proposals are accepted in the first round and participated actively.

Round 1: Proposal Submission
- Design Team. Pick your best team members. At least two, but no more than three people per team. A participant cannot be part of multiple teams. The participant must be an active student (not necessarily from design or HCI related field).
- Design Problem. The design problem for this challenge is “Experience Design for All”.
- Design Proposal. Propose some ideas of an interactive technology-based design solution to solve society problems in Indonesia. It can be in any forms of interactive products, such as applications, products, systems, services, etc and address the selection criteria.
- Design Deliverable. Extended abstract (6 pages, ACM SIGCHI Format, written in English), a 2-min video, and a poster (in PDF format, X banner size, 60cm X 160cm) to describe your ideas.
- Proposal Submission. Upload your video to Youtube. Create a Word document containing the names of your team members, a link to your video. Attach your extended abstract and poster through CHI UX Indonesia 2017 Easy Chair. Please set your video as ‘unlisted video’. Pick a member as corresponding author to receive further information from us.
- Deadline of the proposal submission is 8 January 2017 – (23:59 Western Indonesian Time GMT +7).
- Promote your ideas to the public. Tell your friends about your video in Youtube / Vimeo, ask them to vote and give their feedback. We will monitor the constructive feedback from the public about your design proposal as a part of the review.
- A notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent to each team by 30 January 2017.
- A reviews of your submission will be sent to you as a feedback to improve your design ideas.
Accepted team will have one mentor to guide them to improve their design idea. Mentorship will be held from 2 February – 13 February.
- Connect. Accepted team will be given several option to connect with their respective mentor. Define an appropriate communication channel between your team and your mentor for the best result.
- Revise. Revise your design based on your discussion with mentor. Mentor will be giving advice about the overall strategy for the project, especially a pointers to enhance your design (however, detailed solutions are generally the responsibility of the student groups themselves). Mentors may also give advice on other non-technical (soft skills) advice such as giving feedback on project presentation and report writing.
- Update. Mentees have the responsibility of continually updating and meeting with their mentors on a regular basis about their project progress. It is highly advised that each team give their mentors an update every week, on a set day of the week, unless otherwise previously negotiated. If possible, a face-to-face meeting should be done at least for the first and last meet ups.
- Submit. Submit an updated extended abstract by 20 February 2017.
Round 2: Design Challenge Presentation
- Design Challenge Invitation. The teams whose proposals got accepted are invited to participate in a Design Challenge Presentation that will be held on the 18-19 April 2017.
- Registration.The teams must register by 20 February 2017 to secure their entries in the challenge.The registration fee include the design challenge competition and 2-day CHIuXiD 2017 conference fee.
- Design Challenge Presentation Day. The challenge will be held on the 18-19 April 2017, Jakarta, Indonesia.
- Procedure. Each team will be given a design brief related to the solutions they proposed in their proposals. Each team can gather as many data as possible from the CHIuXiD 2017 conference participants and use them for final presentation on the 19 April 2017. You also can bring your printed X-Banner to introduce your ideas to conference audience.
- Final Presentation. Each team must submit a maximum 5-min video and given maximum 20 minutes of presentation time to the panel of international judges. A prototype would be preferable but not mandatory. If you are looking for presentation inspiration, CHI 2016 provides a good selection of sample presentation.
- Selection. Based on the results of the panel assessment, two winners will be selected from these nominated teams and will be chosen to present their design solutions at the Gala Dinner.
- Awards. The prize award ceremony will be conducted during the CHIuXiD 2017 conference.
Joining the CHIuXiD 2015 design challenge was an unforgettable experience. We’ve got so many experience, friends, and memories. We learnt and experienced how to give a presentation in English in front of experts, which we had never been done before. Because of that, I built more confidence in speaking in English, so I succeeded in getting a scholarship from the University of Science and Technology, South Korea. It was great to have international experts commented on our design concepts and prototypes. We could add a new perspective while designing a system. We learnt not only to see the functionality of a product, but also look holistically the design of the product that we tried to build. We might not win the competition, but we won a one step forward to success and we could develop ourselves to become better and better.Moreover, we also got a chance to attend the whole CHIuXiD 2015 conference where we could also learn from the experts about their knowledge or presentation technique.
